It's Turtle Season—Here's What That Means for Your Stay

May 1 - October 31

Anna Maria Island is a sea turtle nesting habitat, and that's something the whole island takes seriously— including us. From May through October, loggerhead turtles come ashore after dark to nest, and their hatchlings need a dark, clear beach to find their way to the water. Here's what we do on our end: beach chairs are brought in before sunset every evening, and outdoor lighting near the beach is kept dim throughout the season. No bright lights, no obstacles on the sand at night.

If you come across a turtle that looks distressed or disoriented, don't handle it—call AMI Turtle Watch at 941-301-8434 or go to www.islandturtlewatch.com

How You Can Help Sea Turtles

Turn Off Your Lights

Lights visible from the beach deter nesting females and disorient hatchlings, drawing them away from the ocean. Please close blinds and turn off exterior lights facing the beach from dusk to dawn.

Fill Beach Holes

Holes left in the sand can trap sea turtles as they travel to and from the water. Please fill in any holes before leaving the beach each evening.

Remove Beach Items

Chairs, umbrellas, and toys left overnight can entangle turtles and block their path to the water. Please clear all items from the beach by sunset.

Being here during nesting season is genuinely special. Keep an eye on the beach after dark—you might get lucky.
